Chepkirui, Almgren Win New York City Marathon Titles
Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui on Sunday emerged winner of the women’s race at the New York City Marathon, finishing in two hours, 24 minutes and 36 seconds.
Chepkirui secured her second title after edging compatriot and two-time champion, Hellen Obiri, in a thrilling contest during the final 150 metres.
The victory marked her second New York City Marathon triumph, following her maiden title in 2024.
Speaking to ESPN after the race, Chepkirui said she remained patient before making her decisive move, knowing Obiri’s strength.
“The last mile was really tricky. I had to be patient because I knew Hellen was really strong, so I had to really push up to the finish line,” she said.
American runner Jessica McClain finished second, six seconds behind Chepkirui, becoming the first U.S. woman to finish among the top three since Shalane Flanagan achieved the feat in 2018.
In the men’s category, Sweden’s Andreas Almgren claimed the title in his marathon debut, recording a time of two hours, six minutes and one second.
Almgren, who previously established himself in half-marathon and 10,000-metre events, finished 13 seconds ahead of Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa, who came second.
Lesotho’s Kamohelo Mofolo secured third place in the men’s race.
Reacting to his victory, Almgren described the experience as the most emotional moment of his racing career.
“I’ve probably never felt so emotional after a race ever. With 5k left, I felt like I had the legs today,” he told ESPN.
He said seeing the gap between himself and his competitors towards the finish line allowed him to appreciate the moment, particularly as it was his first marathon.
