Super Eagles rally to hold Russia in six-goal thriller
Nigeria’s Super Eagles staged a dramatic second-half comeback to draw 3-3 with Russia in an international friendly on Tuesday.
The result offered Eric Chelle’s men some relief after their disappointing 3-0 loss to Guinea-Bissau in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Kelechi Iheanacho put Nigeria ahead with a powerful long-range effort as the forward marked his return to the national team with a goal.
Russia, however, quickly turned the game around, with Lechi Sadulaev and Matvey Kislyak scoring before the break to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.
Aleksei Miranchuk then increased Russia’s advantage after the restart, putting Nigeria two goals behind and seemingly on course for another defeat.
The Super Eagles refused to give up and began their fightback when Peter Edokpolor reduced the deficit with a well-taken goal.
Akor Adams completed the comeback by scoring Nigeria’s third goal to restore parity and make it 3-3.
Both teams pushed for a late winner, but neither could find the decisive goal as the encounter ended in a six-goal draw.
The result ensured Nigeria avoided another defeat and ended the international window on a positive note.
