Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals convicted of committing an act of indecency inside a mosque in the holy city of Makkah.

The kingdom’s Ministry of Interior disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, according to Khaleej Times.

The executed individuals were identified as Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar.

The ministry said security authorities arrested the duo following the incident, after which investigations were conducted and charges filed against them.

It said a competent court found them guilty and sentenced them to death, citing the gravity of the offence and the violation of the sanctity of the place and time.

According to the ministry, the sentences were imposed under ta’zir, a form of discretionary punishment under Islamic law.

It added that the judgments became final after being upheld by the competent authority, while a royal order was subsequently issued for the executions to be carried out in accordance with Sharia.

The executions took place in the Makkah region on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026, the statement said.

The ministry reaffirmed the Saudi government’s commitment to maintaining security, upholding justice and enforcing Islamic law against those who violate the sanctity of mosques or commit offences against the honour of others.

It warned that anyone found engaging in such acts would face punishments prescribed under Sharia.
