Police Launch Investigation into Abduction of Benue Catholic Priest
The Benue State Police Command has launched an investigation into the abduction of Rev. Fr. John Otache, parish priest of St. Margaret’s Parish, Ajegbe-Awume, in Ohimini Local Government Area.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Aondogu Orchia, confirmed the incident on Friday in Makurdi, saying efforts were underway to secure the cleric’s release.
Orchia said the command was also working to establish the circumstances surrounding the abduction.
The Catholic Diocese of Otukpo said Otache was abducted on Oct. 13 while returning home from Otukpo.
According to a statement signed by the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo, the incident occurred along the Otobi Amejo-Ajegbe Road in Ohimini LGA.
Itodo expressed sadness over the development, which has caused concern within the diocese.
He added that the Bishop of Otukpo, Most Rev. Michael Apochi, was deeply pained by the abduction.
The diocese called on priests, members of religious communities, the laity and other well-meaning individuals to pray for the priest’s safe and speedy release.
