Police Confirm 10 Dead in Taraba Attack, Residents Claim 26

The Taraba State Police Command has confirmed the death of 10 people following an attack by suspected bandits on Binnari Village in Karim Lamido Local Government Area.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Victor Mshelizah, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026.

However, residents disputed the police casualty figure, claiming that 26 bodies had so far been recovered from the community.

They said most of the victims were women and children, while suspecting that the attackers crossed into the area from neighbouring Plateau State.

According to residents, the assailants invaded the remote village in the early hours of Friday and opened fire indiscriminately.

The attack reportedly left residents scrambling for safety as the gunmen moved through the community, shooting people and destroying property.

Several houses were reportedly set ablaze, while farmers’ harvests and other valuables were destroyed during the assault.

Karim Lamido Local Government Area has witnessed repeated attacks on communities, resulting in killings and the destruction of property.

The persistent violence has raised concerns over the security situation in the area, despite efforts by the state government to address the crisis.

Gov. Agbu Kefas has reportedly taken measures, including the deployment of troops and engagement with communities, to tackle the insecurity.

A resident, Mr. Bala Usman, said the latest attack highlighted the continuing uncertainty surrounding security in the local government.

“The latest attack has shown how precarious and fluid the security situation in the local government remains,” he said.

The discrepancy between the police casualty figure and the number reported by residents has raised concerns over the actual death toll.

As of the time of this report, the police had confirmed 10 deaths, while residents maintained that 26 bodies had been recovered.
