Nobel Literature Prize: Swedish Academy to announce 2026 winner Thursday
The Swedish Academy is set to announce the recipient of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday, Oct. 8.
The announcement will be made at the Swedish Academy at 1 p.m. CEST at the earliest, according to the Nobel Prize organisation.
The Literature Prize is the fourth award category mentioned by Alfred Nobel in his will.
Nobel’s lifelong interest in literature influenced his decision to include the discipline among the prizes established through his will.
His library reportedly contained a wide range of literary works in several languages.
During the later years of his life, Nobel also experimented with writing and began producing fiction.
Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai is the current holder of the prestigious award, having won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature.
Krasznahorkai was honoured for his compelling and visionary body of work that reaffirmed the power of art amid apocalyptic terror.
South Korean author Han Kang won the 2024 prize for her intense poetic prose confronting historical traumas and the fragility of human life.
Norwegian author, translator and playwright Jon Olav Fosse was the 2023 laureate.
Since the Nobel Prize in Literature was first awarded in 1901, several prominent African writers have also received the honour.
They include Nigeria’s Wole Soyinka, Egypt’s Naguib Mahfouz, South Africa’s Nadine Gordimer and J.M. Coetzee.
Others are Zimbabwe’s Doris Lessing and Tanzania’s Abdulrazak Gurnah.
The 2026 announcement is expected to renew attention on the literary contributions of writers from different regions and traditions.
