NCoS operationalises maximum security custodial centre in Ibadan

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has commenced operations at the newly completed Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Olojuoro-Olomi, Ibadan, with the admission of 80 convicted male inmates.

The NCoS Public Relations Officer, CSC Jane Osuji, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Osuji said the activation followed the approval of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and a directive by the Controller-General of Corrections, Mr Sylvester Nwakuche.

She said the selected inmates were transferred from designated custodial centres to the facility ahead of its formal inauguration and full operational deployment.

According to her, the centre currently has a capacity to accommodate 800 inmates, with the potential to increase to 3,000 following the completion and activation of additional sections.

She said the additional sections would cater for awaiting-trial persons, female inmates and inmates on death row.

Osuji said the facility had been equipped with custodial cells and beddings, perimeter fencing, a gate lodge, modern kitchen, medical facilities, administrative offices, staff accommodation and recreational facilities.

She said the infrastructure was designed to improve security and inmate welfare while advancing the NCoS mandate of humane custody, reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration.

The PRO said the strategic location of the centre in the South-West would improve inmate distribution and reduce pressure on existing custodial facilities, particularly in Ogun, Osun and Ekiti.

She explained that the phased activation would allow the service to progressively deploy the centre’s capacity in line with operational requirements and the completion of outstanding sections.

Osuji described the facility as a major investment in correctional infrastructure and part of ongoing reforms to improve custodial conditions and strengthen public safety.

She added that the modern centre would provide inmates with access to reformation, rehabilitation and skills development programmes to prepare them for successful reintegration into society.
