Magongo community mourns passing of Olu of Magongo

The Magongo community in Ogori-Magongo Local Government Area of Kogi State has been thrown into mourning following the passing of its revered traditional ruler, His Royal Highness, Sam Bola Ojo, the Olu of Magongo.

The monarch, according to a statement issued by the National President of the Magongo Development Association (MDA), Prince Jordan Alaba Akpata, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Monday, July 20, 2026.

Prince Akpata said the community received the news with profound sorrow and total submission to the will of Almighty God, describing the late king as a distinguished custodian of Magongo’s rich cultural heritage and a symbol of peace, wisdom, unity and selfless service.

He noted that throughout his reign, the Olu of Magongo devoted himself to the progress, stability and development of Magongo land, leaving behind an enduring legacy that would be cherished for generations.

MDA announced a five-day mourning period in honour of the late monarch, effective from Monday, July 20, to Saturday, July 24, 2026.

As part of the observance, the association suspended all social events, ceremonies and other loud celebrations across Magongoland, urging indigenes at home and in the diaspora to mourn the revered traditional ruler with dignity and solemnity.

The MDA also directed that all its meetings be put on hold until the end of the mourning period, with the exception of emergency meetings that may be called by the association’s Executive Council.

The MDA extended its heartfelt condolences to the immediate royal family, the people of Magongo, friends, associates and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with the late monarch.

The association prayed that Almighty God would grant the soul of the departed king eternal rest and give the royal family and the entire Magongo community the fortitude to bear the monumental loss.

The statement added that the Kogi State Government, relevant traditional institutions and appropriate Ministries, Departments and Agencies would, in due course, announce further developments and the official funeral arrangements for the late Olu of Magongo.
