Gunmen Abduct Two Worshippers in Enugu Church Attack, One Rescued

Gunmen on Sunday attacked St. Joseph Catholic Church in Inoyi, Affa Community, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, abducting two worshippers after security operatives rescued one of the victims during a pursuit.

The attackers reportedly stormed the church around 8:30 a.m. while worship was in progress and initially kidnapped three members of the congregation, causing panic among worshippers.

Confirming the incident, the Enugu State Police Command said a joint security team comprising police operatives, Forest Guards and members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group immediately launched a coordinated operation to rescue the victims and apprehend the assailants.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said the security team pursued the fleeing gunmen, forcing them to abandon one of the abducted worshippers, who was rescued unharmed.

He, however, disclosed that the suspects escaped with the remaining two victims, adding that efforts were ongoing to ensure their safe rescue and arrest those responsible for the attack.

Ndukwe urged residents to remain calm and continue to provide credible and actionable information that could aid the operation.

He assured the public that the command had deployed all available resources to secure the release of the remaining victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
